#1 What is wanderlist and why is it?
wanderlist has a simple premise: anyone can
create a list of items and anyone else can vote and add items to the list. wanderlist went online in the fall of 1998 and has been growing steadily ever since.
It is what it is. And every day it's a little more of what it is..
Wanderlist has taken on a life of it's own, which is a good thing.

#2 What do the columns mean on the lists?
Here is an example list item from the list Backpacking Destinations along with the standard bar which is at the top of each list:
The collumns are:
- Rating
shows the current rank as determined by the item's score. In the case of ties the older item (see Listed) is rated higher.
- Vote
is where the and buttons live, which allow site visitors to vote on items
- List Item
is the list item itself
- More Info
contains either a little more information about the list item or a link to a website about the list item, though more often than not it's blank.
- Score
is essentially the sum of all Votes cast for this item ('For' votes are +1, 'Against' votes are -1)
- Votes
is the number of votes which have been cast for the item
- Yearly
shows the item's trend (or score) for the current year. A green figure is positive, a red figure is negative, a '-' shows the trend to be flat. The Yearly figure gets reset for all items in the site each January 1st
- Monthly
shows the item's trend (or score) for the current month. A green figure is positive, a red figure is negative, a '-' shows the trend to be flat. The Monthly figure gets reset for all items in the site on the 1st of each month
- Last Vote
is a time stamp showing the time the last vote was cast for the item
- Listed
is a time stamp showing the time the item was entered into wanderlist
Each of these column headers (except Vote) can be clicked on to sort the list by that column. Clicking the column header again will reverse the sort.

#3 What is this Third Standard Deviation stuff? or Why can't I vote on the top (or bottom) item on my favorite list?
We limit the top and bottom scorers of some lists so that list items which are very popular (or unpopular) don't get too far away from the rest of the list. Is another vote for a list item (or against) very meaningful if it already has a score which is more than ten times the other list items? We don't think so.
The limit we have in place is based on the statistical concept of Standard Deviation.
For the normal distribution, three standard deviations accounts for 99.7% of the range (of scores in this case but the concept is general). The vast majority of list items, including ones ranked at the top or bottom of most lists, fall within this range and are votable.

#4 Is advertising available on wanderlist?
Why thanks for asking. Advertising is available on wanderlist. Costs for banner advertisements start at $0.40 CPM. Contact us for our current rate card.
|
#5 Do you publish an RSS feed for my news aggregator?
An hourly generated RSS file is available here. RSS allows news reader/aggregator applications to use that file to display the most recent lists without having to visit wanderlist.
You can also include any individual list as an IFRAME embeded into another website by following the "use this list on your site" link on any list.

#6 I have a problem with a list or a list item. What should I do?
We personally suggest crying, and gin seems to help with that. A more constructive approach might be to follow the link on each list "update / delete an item" which leads to a simple form where you can suggest corrections to list items. If you have a problem with a list, then please email us.

#7 I lost my password. Actually I can't even remember my username. What should I do?
Did you supply an email address in your profile when you created your user? If so then drop us an email from that account and we'll get you your password. Otherwise you'll need to start a new account. Begging might help and if we can find some other way to verify your identity then we'll give you the password but we're more likely not to give it out.

#8 I'm having problems loging in. or How do I create an account?
The login form should show up whenever you are not logged in and you do something which requires you to be logged in. It is always available on the login page. Sometimes the login form is tacked on to the beginning of another form, such as the Add Item to List form.
There is no separate registration form from the login form. In order to create an account or username (aka handle), simply fill out the additional password field on any of these forms, along with the username, password and "copy the text" fields. If after filling out that form you get errors then it's likely that you either mis-typed something, or in the case of new accounts often the username that you would like to use is already taken.
If you continue to have difficulties please send us an email.
